And I can definitely understand what she means when she says that. It's the same logic that you see in T.Swift's "You Belong to Me". The stereotypically feminine actions are deemed as shallow.
When I ask my father whether he thinks the fashion industry is shallow, he replies with a "yes". I become interested, and I ask him why. He says something about fashion models being "the most shallow people" and googles a photograph of Gianni Versace.
I don't really know where I'm going with this post, because I'm sure that the people reading this post are already aware of how breathtaking and emotional fashion is, how it's culturally significant and often has many more references and ideas incorporated into it than that amazing song by everyone's favorite deep musician. (Not trying to say Lennon isn't any good, it's just that him being so glorified while "girly" things aren't, even though they may be even more thought-provoking)
Of course you're aware of the significance of McQueen's use of red lace in his 1998FW collection was paying a homage to the shooting of the Royal family in Russia, and how the whole collection was an ode to Joan of Arc.
Sometimes it isn't completely obvious what a collection is "about" (Man, do I hate using that term), but even if you don't know exactly, you can always find something of your own to relate to. That's part of the beauty, you don't always have to know what the artist is talking about - you can take his creations and make them meaningful in relation to your own life. Fashion is art. And sometimes it's even wearable. Now why is that shallow?
Anyway, just blowing a bit of steam off. I haven't been actively wearing anything, but actively studying clothes and making lists of things I want to make, buy, outfits I want to wear when I'm where it's sunny..
I snagged a pretty cool jacket recently, I'll post about it soon! <3
Also I have a question. Does anyone know any good sources of writing about Michele Lamy? I've become rather enchanted by her persona, but I can't seem to find any good writing about her, and I would absolutely love to find out as much as I can about her. If anyone knows, I would be super grateful.
Have a super weekend!

Fashion is as deep as you want it to be ;)
ReplyDeleteI think fashion AND style is deep because it's a form of expression. It's art, and our bodies are our canvases and clothes are like paint to express ourselves. Some people might not appreciate it because they're just shallow or are just straight up not interested just like how some people don't appreciate a certain type of music or books or paintings. It's all subjective and depends on the person, I think.
ReplyDeleteIt all depends on the person, sure it can be shallow, but only to shallow people
ReplyDeleteAwesome post, new follower :)
well this is some type of headfuck question, it would be pretty silly to argue for either deep or shallow angle IMO... there's obviously a real craft to it: we can def say "person X is a talented designer", see how one designer compares to or differs from another one, there are specific skills to it etc. i don't think it makes much sense to think about it in those terms... btw not sure if it'd be fair to consider fashion to be like genuine art, it's pretty similar to any other type of design or architecture in a way that it makes life feel more lush and customized but it tells you nothing really
ReplyDelete"it tells you nothing really"
Deleteyou're not listening to what it's telling you. it tells you a LOT. the whole point of my post is the fact that people just don't see it. And I guess that's okay, but it gives the whole industry a stigma, which kinda sucks
ok let's suppose im keen on fashion. and let's suppose i see this wonderful garment, this thing is everything i could ever want. what does it say to me, about anything [except my taste and perhaps a tiny bit about person who made it]?
Deletealso "make stuff meaningful in relation to your own life" is kinda saying that a person is invited to invent co-relations, so they're basically indulging in this illusion, is this not true?
again im not saying fashion has no value or is completely random, or is shallow or deep, i just feel it's not art really
You must not know much about fashion.
